A biker in Indore is accused of harassing two Australian women’s cricket players, and local authorities in Mumbai have increased security for the visiting team. Before their match against India in the semi-finals, the players will now be escorted by police as they walk around the city.
Following the incident in Indore where two Australian Women’s team members were accosted and inappropriately touched by a biker as they were strolling to a cafe close to their accommodation, the preventive measure was taken. The Madhya Pradesh Police nabbed the culprits within hours after the incident caused considerable indignation.
The Mumbai Police and the Maharashtra Cricket Association have enhanced the security protocol for the Australian delegation in response to the incident.
The deployment of officers to accompany the players throughout all movements between their hotel, practice sessions, and match locations was confirmed by a top police official.
All-rounder Ashleigh Gardner’s wife, Monica Wright, shared a story on Instagram about how they traveled to a cafe in Mumbai as two police officers on bikes followed them. As they took the photo, the pair smiled. Curiously, the police officers on the bike grinned as well; one even gave the peace sign. “Police escort to the cafe,” was the caption Wright wrote.
CA closely collaborates with the local police and BCCI
To guarantee that player safety always comes first, Cricket Australia (CA) has maintained regular communication with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and local law enforcement. The CA security team has been closely monitoring all player-related movements by working with liaison officers in Mumbai. Although CA declined to comment on the specifics of the security measures, it did discuss the backing of Indian authorities.
Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the BCCI, declared that any wrongdoing involving visiting players will not be tolerated by the board. Additionally, the BCCI has cautioned all teams taking part in the current competition to follow security protocols to the letter and refrain from going out in public unaccompanied. In spite of the regrettable incident, the Australian players have returned to training and are getting ready for their upcoming World Cup match in Mumbai.
