Asia Cup 2025: Ex-spinner on Shreyas Iyer snub

Maninder Singh, a former spinner for India, expressed surprise at Shreyas Iyer‘s exclusion from the 2025 Asia Cup roster. The 60-year-old was unable to understand why the Mumbai hitter is occasionally left off the Indian squad.

Shreyas led Punjab Kings to the final for the first time since 2014 and ended among the tournament’s top run scorers during his incredible Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. A lot of people thought Shreyas ought to have been included in India’s team for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England. He did not, however, receive the eagerly anticipated Test recall.

But pundits and fans thought Shreyas would return to the national team for the Asia Cup.

According to Maninder, Shreyas’ combative style might be preventing him from being selected for the Indian squad. The former cricket player asserted, however, that his aggressiveness helps him win games on his own and that there shouldn’t be any issues as long as it doesn’t result in inappropriate behaviour.

“I am astonished. The reason he continues getting dropped is beyond me. People have told me that he is a little aggressive, and I can understand that. However, that’s what defines him as a player. “He wins matches on his own because of that aggression,” Maninder Singh told India Today.

“Aggressive behaviour on the pitch does not necessarily indicate a problem, particularly if it does not result in negative conduct. Not every time he sees you, he may be saying hi. However, it’s possible that he’s simply in his element, concentrating on the game and considering how to perform in various scenarios. Being a top athlete includes doing that. About six or seven years ago, I declared that he ought to be the future captain of India. He said, “I absolutely adore the way he plays cricket.”

It is noteworthy that Shreyas has not even been included in India’s Asia Cup reserve roster.
