With spinner R Ashwin expected to become the first player to represent India to sign with a BBL side, the Sydney Thunder have made the largest international acquisition since the League’s founding.
Early in January, Ashwin will join Thunder’s lineup, igniting the team’s pursuit of a trip to the BBL Finals. The 39-year-old contributes an unparalleled cricket record, a fierce competitive spirit, and a dedication to advancing the sport internationally. His arrival at Thunder Green will unify the club’s multicultural Western Sydney stronghold while bringing leadership and style to the pitch.
Ashwin’s off-spin took 765 international wickets in 287 games for India, including 537 Test-level wickets, placing him eighth among all-time bowlers in the format. In addition to winning the Champions Trophy (2013) and the Cricket World Cup (2011) with India, he was named the 2011–20 Men’s Test Team of the Decade and the ICC’s Cricketer and Test Cricketer of the Year of 2016.
Ashwin was the eighth most-capped player in the 16 IPL seasons, having made 221 appearances for five different teams. He won two IPL titles with the Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and 2011, and he now holds the fifth-highest total of 187 career wickets in the competition. After retiring from the IPL and international commitments, Ashwin joins the team.
Thunder knew exactly how they were going to take advantage of me, and they had the guts to support it. The leadership and I had great conversations, and we completely agree on my job. Dave Warner is an amazing player, and it’s always better when your leader thinks the same way you do. I’m very excited to play for the Thunder Nation,” Ashwin remarked.
Sydney Thunder general manager Trent Copeland stated:
Everyone at the Thunder was pleased by Ashwin’s enthusiasm, will to succeed, and comprehension of what makes our organisation unique from the moment we first spoke. Midway through the competition, he will provide world-class bowling and a burst of enthusiasm, and our young players will really benefit from his leadership and mentoring.
Perhaps most excitingly, Ashwin’s relationship with the rapidly expanding Indian diaspora in Western Sydney will encourage new Thunder Nation members and supporters. We are eager for them to join us on this adventure.
Ashwin’s selection of Sydney Thunder makes me incredibly proud.
