Despite this, Shreyas Gopal work ethic has been praised by former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who recalled how the leg-spinner was always willing to learn and asked many of questions during net sessions with the Chennai Super Kings in 2025.
Despite not being able to duplicate the same degree of impact in the Indian Premier League, Shreyas Gopal of Karnataka has been a reliable performer in domestic cricket.
Although Shreyas Gopal was a member of the five-time champions’ squad the previous season, CSK favoured Noor Ahmad of Afghanistan as their main wrist-spinner. However, Gopal has been in outstanding form during the current Ranji Trophy 2025–26 season. In just five games, he has taken 27 wickets at a remarkable average of 17.51.
“I would want to discuss the performance of Shreyas Gopal. I’ve given him the moniker Wickets Gopal. As they say, a spinner gets older. Last year, I had a close-up look at him. He’s put a lot of effort into his bowling. He became famous for getting AB and Virat Kohli out with googlies. He has now also begun a leg-break. The CSK nets were visible to me. On his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated, “He is very eager, works very consistently, and asks questions as well.”
He must have been upset that he did not receive any playing time at the end of the season. Gopal bowled well in the Maharaja Trophy, taking wickets when needed, but I’m not sure if they’ll use two wrist spinners and rely on him this time. Although he is obviously not as strong in Twenty20 cricket, he is still a very valuable player and a skilled fielder. He is an example of how spinners can develop with age, though I’m not sure how much they will use him. Gopal and CSK are having a great time,” he continued.
Gopal will next turn his attention to some white-ball cricket as Karnataka attempts to win the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in 2025. The 32-year-old will try to improve his skills across all areas in the top domestic T20 competition, help Karnataka win the title, and then do the same for his IPL club, as he has been retained by CSK ahead of the 2026 IPL.
