The controversial topic of Jasprit Bumrah‘s workload was recently highlighted by former international cricketers Ravichandran Ashwin and AB de Villiers. Bumrah recently participated in four consecutive home Test matches, including matches against South Africa and the West Indies.
If it were up to him, Ashwin stated, he would suggest that Bumrah exclusively play limited-overs cricket, especially 20-over cricket. Despite being a player who is prone to injuries, Ashwin emphasised Bumrah’s passion for Test cricket and reasoned that he will continue to give the longest format his best.
“I would advise him to limit himself to white-ball cricket if I were in his vicinity. Don’t join the Test team unless India is in dire need of him. However, I am familiar with him. Despite the difficulty, he wants to continue playing because he enjoys the format. I would prefer that he concentrate on T20 cricket for the sake of both India and Bumrah. avoid wasting time on pointless ODIs.
In a video posted to his YouTube page, Ashwin said, “Play only the Tests that matter, especially the away ones.”
In addition to white-ball cricket, where a World Cup is held virtually every other year, De Villiers agreed with Ashwin that the right-armer should only be utilised in Test matches played in the SENA countries.
“I would remove him from every Asian and domestic test. Only use him in England, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. “Let him concentrate on the white-ball formats where World Cups are at stake, and keep him fresh for those,” de Villiers said.
Bumrah has had to endure significant layoffs from playing competitive cricket due to a number of injury setbacks in the past. The remarks made by Ashwin and de Villiers coincide with India’s preparations to finalise their team for the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 World Cup.
For the Men in Blue’s forthcoming three-match series against the Proteas, Bumrah has been rested from the ODI team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has not yet announced the T20I team for the five-match series against the same opponent.
