'What I truly want is to get 100% out of my guys,' Charith Asalanka says ahead of the first T20I against India

Sri Lanka recently suffered terrible results at the ICC competitions, losing both the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup in the group rounds. Then, with Charith Asalanka taking over as captain and Sanath Jayasuriya taking over as interim coach, skipper Wanindu Hasaranga and head coach of Sri Lanka resigned from their positions. Asalanka has insisted the players give it their best on the pitch ahead of the white-ball series against India.

With the first Twenty20 International (T20I) match beginning in Pallekele on July 27, India has travelled to Sri Lanka for three T20Is and as many ODIs. With the retirement of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Twenty20 Internationals and the appointment of Suryakumar Yadav as team captain for the first time, the team lacks experience. Asalanka emphasised that in order to defeat the inexperienced Indian team, he expected players to play brave cricket.

My true goals are to develop a happy environment for my players and to achieve the best performance possible from them. Although there are many outstanding cricket players in our country, it’s crucial to make the most of them and help them win games. I’ve instructed them to play freely and to go outside and carry out our plans fearlessly. As a captain, that’s what you can anticipate from me,” Asalanka stated, according to News18.

LPL is significantly higher now: The Charith Asalanka

Recall that Asalanka guided Jaffna Kings to victory in the just-completed Lanka Premier League 2024. He clarified the tournament’s effects while also suggesting that players who perform well in the LPL should be given an opportunity to play for their country’s team. He also described the league as more competitive than domestic cricket.

“The LPL is the top competition, thus choices like this must be made there. The LPL is at a considerably higher level than domestic T20s. As captain, I believe you should have a strong chance of playing for the national team if you do well in the LPL,” he continued.
