Following impressive performances in England’s losing series against South Africa, Jofra Archer, the country’s top bowler, jumped 16 spots to a career-high third position in the most recent edition of the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings.
Even though South Africa prevailed 2-1, their first ODI series win in England since 1998, Archer’s comeback to the field and his form were as spectacular as his team had hoped. In the second and third games, he recorded consecutive four-for-62 and four-for-18 hauls. In the latter, England defeated the visitors by a record 342 runs in Southampton, marking a historic victory.
In the rankings, Archer’s ascent to third place surpasses his previous peak of eighth, which he previously attained in September 2020.
The only other bowler to significantly improve in the bowling list this week is fellow partner Adil Rashid. After his series-long haul of eight wickets at 9.00 runs each and 4.07 runs per over earned him his highest ranking increase since 2017, he moved up seven spots to seventh place.
After claiming two wickets apiece in the second and third games at Lord’s and Southampton, South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj continues to hold the top spot in the Bowling Rankings.
Joe Root returned to the top 20 of the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings with innings of 61 and 100 in the second and third matches, demonstrating that he still has a lot to give. For the first time in two years, he broke into the top 20, jumping five spots to 19th position.
South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke shot up 44 spots to 64th after becoming the first player to reach fifty in each of his first five ODI innings, while his countryman Jos Buttler jumped seven spots to 35th with innings of 62 and 61 not out.
After making his own 56-slot dash, Jacob Bethell of England sits only one spot behind him in 65th position.
After defeating the host, the United Arab Emirates, and Afghanistan in the 2025 United Arab Emirates T20I Tri-Nation Series, Pakistan saw several of their top players advance in the ICC Men’s T20I Rankings.
Wrist-spinners Sufiyan Muqeem (up seven spots to 15th in the world) and Abrar Ahmed (up 39 slots to joint-27th after figures of four for nine against the UAE and two for 17 against Afghanistan) also saw success, while top run-scorer Fakhar Zaman moved up nine spots to 68th in the Batting Rankings.
Mohammad Nawaz, his teammate and Player of the Series, jumped 13 spots to 30th among the bowlers after dominating the final against Afghanistan with a five-wicket haul (five for 19), including a hat-trick, and finishing the tournament with a career-best rating points of 563. Shaheen Shah Afridi was rewarded with a four-slot rise to 22nd place.
Noor Ahmad of Afghanistan shot up 40 spots to share 33rd place.
After his undefeated half-century against Zimbabwe in Harare, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera moved up three spots to ninth place, and Sikandar Raza completed this week’s update by moving up three spots to fourth place in the ICC Men’s T20I All Rounders Rankings.
