Gujarat only managed to win five of their twelve matches under the leadership of the recently chosen captain Shubman Gill, with the two remaining matches being cancelled due to inclement weather. Anil Kumble, a former cricket player, isn’t concerned that GT didn’t put up much of a fight during the season despite having some excellent players in the ranks. When discussing GT’s season, the 53-year-old pointed out that Gill was in his first year as captain and predicted that he would improve in the upcoming years.
The Gujarat Titans did not make it to the IPL playoffs for the first time in three years. The team captained by Hardik Pandya went on to win the championship in their first season and placed second in 2023. But once Pandya joined the Mumbai Indians, the Gujarat team’s makeup altered, which caused them problems during the 17th IPL season and prevented them from making the playoffs.
Despite GT’s lack of qualification, Anil Kumble said he liked Shubman Gill combative style as skipper and felt the Indian batsman will improve with more playing time.
Leading a team for the first time during an IPL season is never an easy task. It is unlikely that you will succeed on your first attempt. When Hardik Pandya was named captain of GT in his rookie season, I am aware that the team experienced success. “He arranged fields to take wickets while he was captain. Yes, I am aware that he has Noor Ahmed and Rashid Khan, but those fielders still need to be in catching positions. This season, it didn’t work out for them. They were ineligible. All those experiences, nevertheless, must have been a learning curve for him; he will only continue to improve and mature. You get better the more you practise. The more experience you get, the more adept you will be at handling certain circumstances,” he continued.
