Following Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) seventh loss of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday, April 25, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, former India legend Anil Kumble counselled the MS Dhoni-led team to give young players chances in the five games left while keeping an eye on the future.
Notably, Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to field first, allowing the SRH bowlers to bowl CSK out for 154 in 19.5 overs. With a four-for, Harshal Patel was the 2016 champions’ star player. In response, SRH won by five wickets with eight balls remaining thanks to heroic performances from Ishan Kishan and Kamindu Mendis.
Rachin Ravindra is a talented batsman, but Kumble noted that the New Zealand all-rounder seemed hurried in the T20 format and would perform better if he dropped to No. 3. The former India Test captain did, however, say that the five-time winners are encouraged by the opportunity being given to young players like Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis.
“Rachin Ravindra is a wonderful young talent, but he comes across as hurried in this format; perhaps number three would have been a better fit for him. Outside of Shivam Dube, the middle order had no authority. “It’s a good thing that Brevis and Mhatre are now getting games,” Kumble stated on JioStar.
They must begin to consider options other than Pathirana: Anil Kumble
Additionally, Anil Kumble recommended that rather than depending entirely on Matheesha Pathirana, CSK should give Nathan Ellis opportunity. According to the cricket player-turned-expert, now is the perfect moment to start laying the groundwork for the future and provide opportunities to emerging talent.
However, they must begin to look outside Pathirana. Although Nathan Ellis is a seasoned death bowler with a track record of success, he has yet to secure a spot beyond the opening game. It’s the ideal moment to give kids a good run and begin preparing for the future with five games remaining,” he continued.
CSK is virtually eliminated from the postseason chase after nine games with two victories and seven losses. On Wednesday, April 30, they will play the Punjab Kings in Chepauk.
