Angelo Mathews, an experienced all-rounder from Sri Lanka, became the first hitter in the history of international cricket to be timed out.
the November 6 2023 ODI World Cup match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitely stadium in Delhi, he was out without having faced a ball.
He entered the game when Sadeera Samarawickrama was removed from Sri Lanka. The 35-year-old all-rounder was “timed out” because he was unable to take the field because of a helmet problem. Just as Mathews was about to absorb the hit, the strap on his helmet broke off. While Angelo Mathews was waiting for another helmet to arrive, Bangladeshi captain Shakib appealed to the umpires.
Notably, MCC Law 40.1.1 states that “Within three minutes of the dismissal or retirement, the incoming batter must be ready to receive the ball, unless Time has been called, or the other batter must be ready to receive the next ball.” The batter who enters will be timed out if this condition is not met.”
But it’s important to remember that the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup Playing Conditions state that such an occurrence can only last two minutes, not three, which is why Mathews was dismissed. Angelo Mathews could only have prevailed in this situation if the opposing team had dropped their appeal.
Bangladesh declined to rescind the appeal, despite Mathews’ efforts to notify Shakib and the umpires that his equipment was the cause of the delay. The Sri Lankan was observed conversing with the umpires. But umpires Richard Illingworth and Marais Erasmus declared him timed out following a brief pause. When Mathews was dismissed, he was obviously furious about the decision and threw away his helmet in disgust as he crossed the ropes.
