Chinelle Henry, a West Indian middle-order hitter, recently played for the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League 2025. She hammered her way to a 23-ball 62 against the Delhi Capitals Women, which was her most impactful knock. Her team finished at the bottom of the points table, despite her comparatively strong batsmanship and ball skills.
She recently talked about her first idol after becoming interested in cricket and why AB de Villiers was special to her.
“I must admit that I didn’t really watch much cricket as a child. However, AB de Villiers was the first guy I started following when I truly got into it and began to comprehend more. I aspired to be like him in terms of fielding, batting, and general skill. Henry was quoted by the Hindustan Times as saying, “It was just amazing how he could hit the ball and change games.”
Chinelle Henry also discussed how she compares herself to Andre Russell and how she aims to emulate his skill every time she takes the pitch.
“After AB retired, I turned my attention to Andre Russell, a fellow citizen. I consider it a great complement when people back home compare me to him as the female version. One of my goals has been to be able to mimic his power hitting and game-winning efforts in my own game. I’ve been putting a lot of effort into getting better and giving my team the same effect,” she continued.
Henry, the West Indian, also talked about playing under Deepti Sharma’s direction when their full-time captain, Alyssa Healy, isn’t available. Deepti is always asking for assistance and listening to other people’s opinions.
She was likely caught off guard when Healy was ruled out. Although she has experience with the Indian structure, leading a team with disparate cultures, personalities, and languages is challenging. Communication might be difficult on the pitch, particularly in noisy situations, but she constantly asks for assistance and pays attention to other people’s opinions. Henry said that she is receptive to learning and has faith in her athletes.
Later this year, Henry is anticipated to play for West Indies Women in May and June. Three Twenty20 Internationals and an equal number of One-Day Internationals are planned for the West Indian team’s visit of England.
