IND-W vs NZ-W: Amelia Kerr ruled out of series and most of WBBL

Star all-rounder Amelia Kerr‘s decision to miss the remainder of the ODI series against India because of a torn left quadriceps dealt a serious blow to the New Zealand women’s squad. She is uncertain whether she will play in the forthcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) due to the injury she got during the Ahmedabad series opener.

A grade-one quadricep rupture that will take around three weeks to heal was discovered during the 23-year-old’s Friday morning scans. Both Kerr’s national team responsibilities and her time with the Sydney Sixers in the WBBL are negatively impacted by her absence.

Amelia Kerr performed brilliantly against India in the opening ODI.

Even though she lost, she scored an undefeated 25 off 23 balls and took 4 for 42 with the ball. She won Player of the Tournament with 15 wickets at the just finished Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, and this performance came after her outstanding performance there. The head coach of New Zealand, Ben Sawyer, discussed Kerr’s injuries.

We feel terrible about Melie: Sawyer Ben

“We feel terrible about Melie. We are aware of her disappointment at not being able to play these games, as injuries are always a difficult period for players. We’ll definitely miss Melie, but we’re hoping she recovers quickly because everyone understands how important she is to this squad,” Sawyer stated, as reported.

The Sydney Sixers, a platinum-category signing in the WBBL, might miss up to eight of their ten league games if Kerr is out, which would have a big impact on their campaign, which starts this Sunday.

New Zealand’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup may potentially be affected by the defeat. on order to guarantee straight qualification for the 2025 ODI World Cup, the White Ferns, who are currently ranked sixth on the Women’s ODI Championship table, are working to place in the top six. The teams’ December games versus Australia are pivotal.

Kerr will travel home on Sunday to begin her recovery program, according to the New Zealand Cricket Board. No one has been chosen as an urgent replacement in the ODI team for the remaining games, which are set for October 27 and 29 in Ahmedabad.
