On Friday, November 7, the festivities in Mohali continued after the India Women’s team won the World Cup trophy in Navi Mumbai five days earlier. All-rounder Amanjot Kaur and top-order batswoman Harleen Deol returned home to a passionate reception that included dancing, dhol, and family fighting back tears.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport was a hive of activity by 8 AM. Parnaaz Kaur held her father Parminder Singh’s hand and gripped the national flag closely while sporting a custom-made T-shirt with her aunt Amanjot’s face on it. Amber and Tejas were excitedly anticipating their aunt Harleen, whose parents had spent the night before adorning an SUV and a tractor with posters of the Indian squad.
As neighbors gathered to celebrate, Harleen’s parents, Charanjit Kaur and B. S. Deol, danced to the dhol. When a police officer told the throng that the airplane had been delayed because of a problem with air traffic control in Delhi, the celebrations came to a brief halt.
Coach Nagesh Gupta, who initially recognized Amanjot’s promise as a schoolgirl in Sector 32, was among those at the airport. Mandeep Sandhu, a former junior world boxing champion, and Jiwantjot Singh Teja, a Dronacharya awardee, were also present and excited to see the World Cup victors.
“Seeing his ward return with a World Cup medal is the best thing a coach could ask for. According to Sandhu, who was reported by The Indian Express, “Punjab’s daughters have demonstrated what is possible when opportunity meets belief.”
As the excitement in the audience increased, security guards led the players to open-top SUVs that were waiting outside. Amanjot motioned for her coach to stand next to her in the second car.
“It seems like Punjab as a whole is present. “It’s overwhelming to come home with this medal and be in these arms,” Harleen remarked.
“He owns this medal just as much as I do. “Our journey is built on the foundation of families and coaches,” Amanjot stated.
Even the traffic cops stopped to record the festivities as they passed through Mohali. Neighbors had been waiting for hours at Harleen’s house in Sector 80. Amanjot’s incredible catch of Laura Wolvaardt was cited by Harleen as the pivotal moment in the World Cup final. She also laughed at her publicly shared conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Amanjot saw her grandmother at the hospital before going home. Even the caterers at the nearby neighborhood park stopped their work to snap photographs with the World Cup star when she returned.
