Prior to the third season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2025), Deepti Sharma has been appointed the new captain of the UP Warriorz. In the upcoming season, she will take over as Australia’s captain in lieu of Alyssa Healy. Notably, Healy’s foot injury sustained during the 2024 T20 World Cup prevented her from playing in this tournament. Due to a ruptured plantar fascia in her foot, she was unable to participate in the event final against New Zealand.
Speaking of Deepti Sharma, UP Warriorz paid an astounding INR 2.6 crore for the 27-year-old at the first WPL auction.
In eight games of the 2024 WPL, the all-rounder scored 295 runs with a strike rate of 136.57 and an average of 98.33. She surpassed her nine-wicket total from the previous season by taking 10 wickets with the ball at an average of 21.70.
The choices we made at the auction had us giddy: Jon Lewis
The team paid 11.6 crore and bought three players at the WPL 2025 auctions to compete with their squad of 18 players. In the 2023 competition, UP lost to the Mumbai Indians and advanced to the Eliminator. The following season, they finished fourth and missed out on the playoffs. Following the auction, UP coach Jon Lewis expressed excitement about the next opportunity.
“We are really happy with the choices we made at the auction. The UP Warriorz still have a solid core, with a healthy mix of youthful energy and invaluable experience. The key now is to work together and fulfill our obligations efficiently. Lewis told Sportstar, “I’m excited to get back together with the team and start getting ready for the season.”
