Cricket fans have been talking a lot about the possible return of the “uncapped player rule” in advance of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, since it may allow the great MS Dhoni extend his career.
According to earlier reports, the BCCI was asked by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to reinstate the regulation that permits a player to remain in the uncapped category if they have retired from international cricket for a minimum of five years. Prior to being removed in 2021, this rule was implemented during the first season. If it does, though, CSK will be able to maintain MS Dhoni without having to worry about his pay cap being too much compromised.
In contrast to what has been reported, Kasi Viswanathan, the CEO of CSK, has stated that they did not submit a request to the BCCI to reinstate the rule. He said that the Men in Yellow management had been notified by the cricket governing body itself of their desire to reinstate the rule.
In an interview, Viswanathan said to Gaurav Gupta from Times of India, “I have no idea about it – we have not requested it – BCCI have themselves told us that the ‘uncapped player rule’ may be kept, that’s all – they haven’t announced anything yet.”

A team would only have to pay INR 4 crore for an uncapped player under the former retention rule. Prior to the 2022 mega auction, CSK paid INR 12 crore to retain Dhoni. The Ranchi native gave up his position as captain of the five-time IPL winning team to Ruturaj Gaikwad shortly before the 2024 season got underway. At the conclusion of the league stage, CSK placed fifth on the points table under Gaikwad’s leadership.

Dhoni concluded the competition with a strike rate of 220.55 after making some thrilling cameos later in the order. The 43-year-old’s admirers will want him to play for at least one more season before calling it a day on an incredible career.
