Alex Carey Achieves Rare Ashes Feat

Alex Carey of Australia has made history by being the fourth wicketkeeper-batter to score 50 or more runs in both innings of an Ashes Test. At the conclusion of Day 3 of the third Test of the current Ashes 2025–26, Australia leads by a substantial 356 runs, while Alex Carey and Travis Head are undefeated at the Adelaide Oval.

The list also includes two additional Australians. Brad Haddin recorded 94 and 53 in Australia’s first and second innings, respectively, in a match that the Australians ultimately won by an overwhelming 381 runs at the Gabba in Brisbane in 2013. That was the last time a wicketkeeper had accomplished the feat.

Wicketkeepers in both innings of an Ashes Test who score fifty or more

Sr. No. Player Team Venue Year Scores
1 Alan Knott England The Oval 1972 92 & 63
2 Ian Healy Australia Adelaide 1995 74 & 51*
3 Brad Haddin Australia Brisbane 2013 94 & 53
4 Alex Carey Australia Adelaide 2025 106 & 52*

Earlier in the game, when the hosts won the toss and chose to bat first, Alex Carey led Australia in scoring in their opening innings. He hit 106 runs off 143 balls, including a six and eight fours.

It was Alex Carey second century in 2025 and his third in Test cricket.

The 34-year-old made five catches with the gloves while keeping the wickets on the second day. After being bowled out for 286 with captain Ben Stokes leading the way with 83, the Three Lions ultimately gave away the lead in the first innings.

Australia won the first two games in Perth and Brisbane by eight wickets. Given how the current game is going, it is more and more likely that Australia will win the series, therefore rendering the fourth and fifth Tests meaningless.

In Australia’s second innings, Travis Head, who had been removed for just 10 in the first, amassed a substantial score. He will be eager to build on the momentum and surpass his best Test result of 175 points.
