Ranji Trophy 2024-25: Ajinkya Rahane recalled from pavilion, allowed to resume batting in match vs Jammu & Kashmir

On Day 2 of their Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Mumbai, Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane was summoned back to bat under dubious circumstances. On the opening ball of the 25th over, which was bowled by Umar Nazir, the veteran hitter was ruled out. Rahane headed to the pavilion after nicking the ball down the leg-side to the wicketkeeper.

Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur, the next person in line, had already moved to the center. However, Rahane was called back and Thakur was sent back after waiting for a few minutes before being permitted to strike. Everyone later realized that the delivery in question was a front-foot no-ball. But when Thakur was first returning to the dugout, it appeared as though he had been “timed out.” Even the live television analysts believed he was late to the crease because of the way things went.

Furthermore, JioCinema, the official broadcaster of the match, never showed the so-called no-ball during the live broadcast. According to, after being contacted, the public and the management of both teams were informed that the third umpire may view the film, but not the television production crew.

“The umpire was on a different channel when I attempted to contact them via the walkie-talkie. Therefore, communicating with the on-field umpire took some time.

Ajinkya Rahane did not hear the umpires telling him to wait, as evidenced by the fact that he himself appeared on the screen.

There was no question that it was a blatant no-ball. The third umpire-turned-match referee, Nitin Goel, revealed, “I will forward the pertinent video to the BCCI.”

Rahane was unable to capitalize on the second opportunity, though. A few overs after the odd incident, Nazir hit once more. However, this time, the legality of the wicket-taking delivery was verified. Rahane returned with a score of 16 off 36 deliveries in Mumbai’s second innings.

Tanush Kotian and Shardul Thakur save Mumbai

Mumbai is now ranked at 219/7 in the 53rd over of the contest. As of this writing, they have a 133-run advantage. Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian appeared to have saved the squad from shame by putting together an undefeated century-run partnership from a vulnerable position of 101/7.

The hosts were left reeling with J&K on top after a top-order meltdown earlier in the day. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal died for 26 and 28, respectively. Before Thakur and Kotian arrived to avoid harm, Mumbai was in a lot of trouble after a rare middle-order failure.
