The highlight of the World Test Championship (WTC) final was Aiden Markram, who helped South Africa chase down a 282-run target against Australia’s elite bowling attack with a magnificent century in the fourth innings at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
The Proteas ended a torturous 27-year wait to win an ICC title, mostly thanks to Aiden Markram spectacular knock (136 off 207). Kyle Verreynne’s winning run at the Home of Cricket on Saturday, June 14, gave South Africa the coveted WTC mace.
An emotional Aiden Markram declared his love for Test cricket following the historic victory.
He hoped that young people in the Rainbow Nation would appreciate the Test cap and recognise the significance of the game’s longest format.
“My favourite and most significant format has always been the test. Naturally, we have little control over the format; it’s truly a matter of the cards you’re given. Maintaining Test cricket as the top format in South Africa is crucial, in my opinion. It is more about the young man emerging and his belief that the Test cap is the most significant thing in South Africa, even though we are aware of the dynamics of the cricket globe. “I’ve always thought that playing Test cricket should be the top priority, but how long he plays for is a whole different discussion these days,” Aiden Markram stated following the WTC Final.
In the previous twenty years, no team has pursued such a target at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Nevertheless, South Africa had a great deal of confidence in their skills and won by five wickets. Aiden Markram stated that the Proteas, who had come so close to winning ICC crowns, particularly in recent years, had hopefully answered all the questions.
“Hopefully, all of the questions that were previously raised have now been addressed. Since many days of good cricket can only lead to outcomes, I thought the WTC Final would be the hardest,” Aiden Markram remarked.
When South Africa needed just six runs to win, Markram was out. Travis Head made a superb diving catch at mid-wicket after he clipped a delivery off his pads to his right. The T20 captain of South Africa stated that he was unhappy not to have led his team to victory and that he would have wanted to have done so.
“I wish I had been able to soak up the standing ovation while standing there.” But that’s just me; when I got out, I was furious with myself. However, there are undoubtedly one or two recollections from that,” he said.
