Daniel Drew‘s undefeated double-century plus the efforts of Nathan McAndrew and Wes Agar have put South Australia in a commanding position against Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield match.
SA concluded day two at Adelaide Oval with a score of 2 for 31, giving them a lead of 307 overall. Drew, who was undefeated on 208 when South Africa declared at 7 for 438 at lunch, was trapped leg before wicket by Matthew Kelly for 4.
In his first innings of 345 balls, Drew hit 25 fours, surpassing his previous best first-class total of 130.
He shared an unbroken 78-run eighth-wicket stand with McAndrew, who hit four sixes in 56 runs off 59 balls.
McAndrew and fellow paceman Agar shared the first six wickets of Western Australia’s innings, reducing the visitors to 162 for a deficit of 276.
WA were 2 for 5 after two early blows by Agar and lost 3 for 0 to fall to 6 for 63 following Cameron Bancroft and Aaron Hardie’s contributions of 27 each. After tea, they were reeling again at 7 for 71.
Marcus Stoinis, batting seventh in his first first-class encounter since March 2020, scored eight fours and a six before being run out by Drew’s direct hit to mid-on. With Charlie Stobo, he added 81 runs to the eighth wicket.
In South Australia‘s first innings, the Western Australia attack struggled, with David Moody conceding 129 runs in 28 wicketless overs and Corey Rocchiccioli capturing 1 wicket in 135 deliveries.
During their second innings of the day on Saturday, South Africa had Jake Carder caught at short cover off Stoinis for 8 and then lost Drew to the second delivery of the penultimate over.
