On January 9, SA20’s third season will premiere. Rashid Khan, the captain of MI Cape Town, gave his opinions on how Afghanistan cricket has evolved and how SA20 and other platforms have contributed to this change.
Afghanistan has had great success as a squad in recent years. Ten years after making their international debut, they made it to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup last year. The rise of Afghan athletes participating in international competitions was discussed by renowned spinner Rashid.
I think that these competitions greatly improve cricket. And since Afghan players have entered leagues and played overseas, I think Afghanistan cricket has benefited immensely. Our performance in the 2023 World Cup, as well as in the ODI and T20 competitions, was consistent with our World Cup performance. We made it to the semifinals of two World Cups. I don’t think anyone would have thought Afghanistan would make it to the semifinals ten years ago. Khan said, “That’s just the kind of opportunity they get here in such big leagues,” at the formal captains’ press conference.

Afghan cricket players have had numerous chances to showcase their abilities thanks to SA20. Notably, Ben Stokes, who was injured, has been replaced in the MI Cape Town squad by Sediqullah Atal, who averaged 122.66 with the bat in the Emerging Asia Cup.
As you mentioned, Azmatullah and Gurbaz are there, along with a couple other young talents like Noor and Naveen. They get the opportunity to compete against well-known athletes because they are all coming and playing in this major league. “You know, you don’t get to play with a big superstar very often in Afghanistan,” he said.
Due to issues, Michigan Cape Town placed last in the SA20 rankings for the first two seasons.
However, with Rashid back as captain and a fresh roster, the squad is optimistic that things will get better. The team includes Afghan players Azmatullah Omarzai and Sediqullah Atal in addition to stars like Trent Boult, Reeza Hendricks, and Kagiso Rabada.
Although we don’t have a league of our own, you are welcome to play with them here. For a month, you’re sharing the dressing room and learning from them. This, in my opinion, has significantly improved Afghanistan cricket as we are no longer in a situation where we can just think about going to and participating in the ICC events.
“I think the source of all the expectations is participating in the competitions and honing our cricketing abilities. According to Rashid, “It’s wonderful to see the young people coming, and I hope that many more will join the major leagues and play and improve.”
