Adam Gilchrist, the legendary former Australian batsman and wicketkeeper, advised Dhoni to retire from competition following the 2025 Indian Premier League. Dhoni has nothing to prove to anyone in the sport, according to the former.
In the absence of primary captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni is now leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL).
The five-time champions are currently wallowing at the bottom of the points table, and the wicketkeeper-batter has failed to turn around CSK’s woes in the IPL 2025. In their nine IPL 2025 games thus far, the Men in Yellow have suffered seven defeats.
“In the game, MS Dhoni has nothing to prove to anyone. He will know what to do, but maybe he won’t have to be there the next year. Before Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium hosted CSK’s match against Punjab Kings on Wednesday, April 30, Gilchrist told Cricbuzz, “I love you, MS. You are a champion and an icon.”
This season, Dhoni, who is 43 years old, has batted in nine innings.
At a strike rate of 142.86 and an average of 28, he has amassed 140 runs. When Dhoni scored an undefeated 11-ball 26 against the Lucknow Super Giants, he was named Player of the Match. But in the IPL 2025, this was the lone game-winning innings for the former captain of India.
There is still a mathematical opportunity for Chennai to qualify for the playoffs. They must, however, win their final five games and hope for more favourable outcomes.
On April 25, CSK’s most recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad ended in a loss at home. Before SRH chased the mark with five wickets and eight balls remaining, Dhoni and company were bowled out for 154. CSK has to win on Wednesday in order to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.
