Abhishek Nayar on India's shocking collapse vs Sri Lanka: "In these conditions, the game can turn on its head."

Following a draw in the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka, the two teams faced off in the second match on Sunday, August 4, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. While India would have liked to win the second game and get off to a strong start, Sri Lanka quickly dashed their hopes by defeating the visitors.

Abhishek Nayar, the assistant coach for India, shared his observations from the second One-Day International, highlighting the role played by Jeffrey Vandersay and the lower order of the hosts. He also discussed how the pitch’s characteristics played a big part in India’s defeat in the match.

Was you surprised? Yes, there is a surprise, but you expect and understand that the game may turn on its head because there is so much spin available in these circumstances, Abhishek Nayar was quoted by as saying.

“Even in the previous game, scoring against the new ball was not too difficult. It became slightly more difficult to bat second as the ball grew older. This occurs occasionally under difficult circumstances, particularly in the 50-over format.

They bowled really well; I believe Vandersay bowled the perfect length in these circumstances. Under these circumstances, the pitch helps create these phases while the ball is turning, as seen by Vandersay’s style of bowling today, which involved using his finger to bowl from stump to stump. I think we should give Sri Lanka more credit now,” he continued.

Nayar discussed the team’s desire to assess the current circumstances and make an effort to determine why similar performances have occurred twice in a row. He thought back to the first One-Day International, where India failed to form partnerships, and contrasted it with the Men in Blue’s defeat in the second One-Day International, where they lost a lot of wickets quickly.

“We wish to investigate and correct the reasons behind the two consecutive occurrences. We were able to stitch relationships the day before last. However, we lost a lot of wickets in a hurry today,” Nayar remarked.
