Aaron Finch retires from T20I after a 12-year international career

After declaring his ODI retirement, Finch led Australia in the recently finished T20 World Cup. Aaron Finch, one of the most seasoned players for Australia, announced his retirement from T20 Internationals on February 7, Tuesday, after a 12-year international playing career. Finch continued to coach his team in the shortest format after having retired from ODIs last year in September 2022.

After 103 matches for Australia, 76 of which he captained the squad, Aaron Finch announces his retirement from Twenty20 cricket.

He departs as Australia’s leading run scorer in the format with 3120 runs scored at an average of 34.28 and a strike rate of 142.5. In the format, his career-high 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018 is the highest individual score. He held the record before with 156 against England in 2013. He also took part in five Test matches for Australia.

Many people think that Aaron Finch would hang up his cricketing boots after the T20 World Cup in their country in 2022 because of his decision to retire from the 50-over format last year. He didn’t make a decision, though, until the Big Bash League, Australia’s top domestic league in which he played for the Melbourne Renegades, was over.

“Now is the proper time to step aside and give the squad time to plan and build towards that tournament. Realizing that I won’t be playing till the next T20 World Cup in 2024. I want to express my gratitude to my family, especially to my wife Amy, my teammates, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia, and the Australian Cricketers’ Association for their assistance in enabling me to compete at the highest level in the sport I like.

“I also want to extend a sincere appreciation to all of my followers who have helped me succeed internationally. The first T20 World Cup victory in 2021 and winning the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2015 will be the two experiences I love the most since team success is what you play the game for. It has been a wonderful honour to play with and against some of the greatest players of all time while representing Australia for 12 years, Finch said in a statement released by the team.

While Aaron Finch retires from T20 international cricket after a successful career, the Australian side is left with the difficult task of selecting a new captain for the game’s shortest format. The front-runner for the position is Pat Cummins, but the unpredictable pacer is unlikely to guide the squad in all three game types.
