Exclusive: Aaron Finch analyses Australia's underwhelming performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup

Aaron Finch, a former cricket player, is presently playing for the Australia Champions in the World Championship of Legends, a T20 tournament taking place in England.

The former captain of Australia voiced his dissatisfaction with Mitchell Marsh’s team and their early elimination from the just finished T20 World Cup 2024 in an exclusive interview with CricTracker. The Australians were one of the favourites to win the event and appeared in terrific form during the Group Stage, but they suffered mightily in the Super Eights. Their season was tragically ended with losses to Afghanistan and India in the Super Eights.

Noting their early elimination from the 20-team competition, Finch continued, “It’s a huge letdown not to make it to the semifinals, especially with the calibre of talent they have.” Although he was aware that an over might decide the outcome of a Twenty20 match, he was dissatisfied with Australia’s efforts. The 37-year-old discussed how Australia’s play on the field in several games was unusually careless, and he thinks that may have cost them a chance to advance to the semifinals.

They would likely be disappointed if they were to lose in the semifinals. In my opinion, qualifying for the semifinals in a T20 competition is a tick, no matter what squad you have. It’s a very challenging format. Without a doubt, Australia would be dissatisfied. They were rather optimistic. They entered the event as one of the favourites. And they were just marginally unsuccessful. They undoubtedly committed some atypical fielding errors early in the competition, which cost them at various stages, Finch told CricTracker.

Finch, who guided Australia to World Cup triumph in 2021, acknowledged that the team had some benefits despite their early elimination. The most significant of them all were the occasional, forceful jabs from Marcus Stoinis. Known by most as “The Hulk,” he amassed 10 wickets in the league while smashing 169 runs at a strike rate of 164.07 in seven games. Although the Victoria native praised him for his important contributions, she believes that the team would still be let down by their subpar performance.

However, I believe that other players, like Marcus Stoinis, had excellent tournaments overall. He was excellent for Australia both with the bat and the ball. They’ll be sad (that they didn’t use Stoinis to the team’s advantage),” he continued.

To expand on the topic, the World Championship of Legends is a six-team competition in which champions from India, the West Indies, Pakistan, South Africa, and England are also competing. With 173 runs in 3 innings at an average of 57.66, Finch is now leading the list for Most Runs in WCL 2024. With two victories in their first three games, the Australia Champions, led by Brett Lee, are now ranked second in terms of points.
