Aakash Chopra thinks that India would not need the services of the talented opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal during the upcoming Champions Trophy in 2025.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chose Yashasvi as the backup opener for the Champions Trophy and the ongoing ODI series against England. In the first match, India awarded Yashasvi his first ODI cap; nevertheless, the southpaw was dismissed after scoring 15 off 22 balls. The Mumbai batsman was later dropped from the starting lineup for the second ODI.
India’s opening partnership seemed to be established after Rohit’s forceful century in the second ODI and Shubman Gill’s half-centuries in both games. According to Chopra, Virat Kohli will also be back in the running, and Shreyas Iyer will stay at number four. The former India opener said that just one of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant would be chosen. In the first two ODIs, the Karnataka cricket player has only amassed 12 runs.
“The batting order appears to be set. Rohit has started to score runs. Shubman Gill, our vice captain, is performing admirably. One day, Virat Kohli will return. For heaven’s sake, even if he doesn’t, India won’t let him leave. Shreyas Iyer is in at number four. Whether it’s KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, or Axar Patel at number five is irrelevant. Rahul or Pant will have to be left out of the equation. “An additional batter is also available,” Chopra said on his YouTube page.
Yashasvi Jaiswal might not be necessary for you. It is possible.
You wanted to maintain the left-right, left-right batting order. You will no longer be able to do it. “You have played your hand, and that has backfired,” he said, suggesting a shift in approach after Iyer’s outstanding performance in the first ODI.
Mohammed Siraj appears to have a strong chance of getting in: Aakash Chopra
Chopra also suggested that India will choose the seasoned Mohammed Siraj if Jasprit Bumrah doesn’t recover in time for the Champions Trophy. Siraj was left out of the squad for both the three-match ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy.
You cannot play the game Yashasvi. Therefore, if you can’t play him, why bring him to the Champions Trophy? Mohammed Siraj is more likely to play than Yashasvi Jaiswal, in my opinion. If you believe that more experience is needed in the bowling attack against Pakistan, I believe Mohammed Siraj has a fair chance of getting selected. One of the three quick bowlers you may want to bring in is Siraj. At that point, Yashasvi could have to step down,” Chopra said.
