Aakash Chopra, a former Indian cricket player, believes that Shubman Gill’s skills as a skipper can only improve with time and that his choices at such an early stage in his career shouldn’t be harshly criticised by the public or media. Gill served as India’s full-time Test captain for the first time at the recent 2-2 conclusion of the five-match Test series against England.
Given that Gill is replacing Virat Kohli, Aakash Chopra noted that expectations have always been high for him because he is regarded as a generational talent and bats at number four.
“Although he is 25 years old, the captaincy is still being developed. He’ll get it. He has never done a series before. He occasionally followed the ball, but we’ve seen that happen with all captains. At one point or another, we witnessed Rohit, Dhoni, Virat, and everyone else place fielders wherever the ball went. Numerous queries were posed, and some parallels were also made. In a video that was uploaded to his official YouTube account, Aakash Chopra said, “If Virat Kohli is King, his name (Gill’s) has been kept Prince, so the comparisons start quickly.”
Aakash Chopra agrees with Gill’s choice of players.
The former cricket player who is now a broadcaster noted that, looking back, Gill made the right choice in strengthening the batting order rather than adding Kuldeep Yadav, another specialist spinner.
Could he have chosen his team with more courage? He could have shown more courage, I’ll admit, but it’s easier said than done. I firmly believe that Kuldeep Yadav ought to have participated in games, but if you put yourself in Shubman Gill’s position, you would argue that the batting isn’t performing up to par, the No. 3 hasn’t settled in, Rishabh Pant has been hurt, and I’m not sure what has to be done at No. 6,” Aakash Chopra said.
After scoring 754 runs in 10 innings, Gill became the series’ top scorer. He was a key batsman for India, who levelled the series with an exciting six-run victory at The Oval and went on to win the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
