'We are not giving him the position of 'Prince' incorrectly' - Aakash Chopra lauds Shubman Gill upon his Chennai century

Shubman Gill’s exceptional skill and strokeplay have consistently earned him comparisons to the game’s greatest players. But a particularly poor stretch in the red-ball format from June 2023 to February 2024, during which he failed to score a single fifty or more runs in twelve innings, had seriously cast doubt on him in the eyes of Indian fans. The term “Prince,” which had been bestowed to Gill, has been scrutinised by the public, with many stating that it was not appropriate for him.

In defence of Gill, former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra pointed out that he had made more hundreds in international cricket since the beginning of 2020 than players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had during the same time period.

“In this decade, who has scored the most hundreds for Team India? It’s a really fascinating one. We claimed to have never noticed that CricCrazyJohns had tweeted something. He wrote about Shubman Gill, who has amassed 12 hundreds in 114 innings for India in international cricket this decade. In a video posted on his YouTube account, Chopra said, “It is simply amazing.

Furthermore, Chopra claimed that the moniker “Prince” associated with Gill was entirely justified, citing precise figures for Rohit and Kohli in comparison to Gill.

“In the same period, Rohit Sharma has amassed 10 hundreds and played 148 knocks. Virat Kohli is our GOAT (best of all time) since he has amassed 10 hundreds and played 149 knocks. Hence, Shubman Gill is much ahead with twelve centuries. We are not incorrectly bestowing upon him the title of “Prince,” Chopra said.

Greatness is waiting for him if he sets his mind to it: Aakash Chopra

According to Chopra, Gill is destined for larger things because it appears like success is practically ingrained in his genes.

It’s ingrained in his DNA. This man is pursuing greatness, in my opinion, because he truly believes it. Greatness is waiting for him if he sets his mind to it. I think it’s a great tale for Indian cricket,” Chopra continued.

Gill will be trying to build on his unbroken 119-run innings, which included 10 fours and four maximums, in India’s second essay of their opening Test match against Bangladesh.
