‘Here comes their most consistent batter’ - A lighthearted jab at Tom Hartley from Dhruv Jurel

In the fifth and final Test match, India defeated England by an innings and 64 runs at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. India’s wicketkeeper-battler Dhruv Jurel was overheard making fun of spinner Tom Hartley as the latter went out to bat during England’s second innings.

In the first 10 overs of Day 3, England’s top three fell to experienced spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, resulting in a disastrous start to their second innings. Before lunch, Ashwin took four wickets and Kuldeep Yadav took two, as the tourists eventually lost five wickets. At that moment, it looked as though England would lose by an inning in the third day’s second session.

Ben Foakes was removed from the game shortly after the interval by Ashwin, who was playing in his 100th Test match. The day’s acting captain, Ben Foakes, claimed two wickets in an over. And so England were down to their last two. Afterwards, Ravindra Jadeja secured the final wicket of Shoaib Bashir to ensure India’s victory.

As Tom Hartley entered, Jurel greeted him with, “This is their most reliable batter.”

India won by 64 runs in an innings over England.

Day 3 saw India crush England for 195 in their second inning, winning the match by an innings and 64 runs. Ashwin was outstanding with the ball, taking five wickets. India became the first team under the leadership of captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum to defeat England in the “Bazball era” with this 4-1 victory. With the assistance of 12 boundaries, Joe Root struck 84 off 128 deliveries to emerge as England’s most productive batsman in their second inning.

Earlier in the day, England won the toss and chose to bat first, which led to the worst conceivable start. Kuldeep Yadav (5/72) and Ashwin (4/51) were the two bowlers who helped India defeat England by bowling them out for 218 runs. However, India’s batsmen demonstrated promise by amassing a massive 477 runs. The hosts relied heavily on Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who both scored noteworthy hundreds. In the meantime, Sarfaraz Khan, debutant Devdutt Padikkal, and Yashasvi Jaiswal all scored half-centuries.
