The team, which includes veterans like Riahabh Pant Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, will be captained by Rohit Sharma. India defeated England 4-1 in their most recent Test series, which was played at home. A place in the side for the forthcoming assignment eluded Shreyas Iyer, Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal, KS Bharat, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar, Washington Sundar, and Saurabh Kumar, all of whom were involved in the England series at one point or another.

A 16-person team has been released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for India’s first Test match against Bangladesh, which is scheduled to start on Thursday, September 19, at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.

For personal reasons, Kohli had chosen not to play in all five Test matches against England; however, he has since returned. In an away series against Bangladesh in December 2022, he made his final Test debut. Both Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, the wicketkeeper-batter who did well against England, have been kept in their positions.

Meanwhile, left-arm seamer Yash Dayal has been called up for the first time for India after performing admirably for India B against India A in the Duleep Trophy 2024 first round. In the course of the two innings, he scored 10 and 16, with figures of 1/39 and 3/50.

Rishabh Pant is playing in a Test match for the first time since returning to competitive cricket earlier this year.

In the previously mentioned Duleep Trophy match, Bengal seamer Akash Deep—who made his debut against England earlier this year—picked up nine wickets and rightfully kept his spot. After being forced to withdraw from the domestic red-ball competition owing to sickness, Mohammed Siraj made a full recovery and will now share new ball duties with Bumrah when they play Bangladesh.

After dominating Pakistan in a two-Test series played in their backyard earlier this month, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s team will be full of confidence. In red-ball cricket, India has, nevertheless, been among the most reliable teams recently, particularly at home. In order to maintain their lead in the World Test Championship (WTC) points standings, the hosts would like to win both of their Test matches.

India’s squad for the first Test versus Bangladesh

Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal.
