‘There is one thing he should improve on, otherwise Ashes would be gone’ – Nasser Hussain wants Joe Root to develop one facet of his game

The record for the most Test hundreds by an England cricketer, held by Alastair Cook, was recently surpassed by Joe Root.

'There is one thing he needs improve on, otherwise the Ashes would be away.' Nasser Hussain wants Joe Root to develop of his game

Throughout the current three-match Test series between Sri Lanka and England, Joe Root has been playing brilliantly at the bat. Nasser Hussain, though, believes that the former Test captain needs to work on one area of his game since failing to do so could hurt England’s prospects of winning the Ashes in Australia the following year.

In the second Test match between England and Sri Lanka, Root amassed hundreds in both innings, giving the Three Lions an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series. He surpassed Alastair Cook’s record of 33 with his tonne in the second innings, making it his 34th in the format. Among batters for England, Root has the most hundreds in Test matches. Having scored 350 runs at an astounding average of 116.67 over four innings, he is also the series’ top run scorer.

While everyone is praising Root immensely for his batting ability, Nasser Hussain has offered helpful criticism of his catching and asked for improvement prior to the eagerly awaited trip of Australia.

“Sri Lanka, like West Indies, do not play a lot of Test cricket, but as we move into the final Test of the summer this week, England have done enough against the pair to suggest they are positioning themselves nicely for the Australian challenge,” Hussain wrote in a piece for The Daily Mail.

Though Root’s batting was at its peak, he still has room for improvement because he is a person of such high standards when it comes to his catching. Here, he took several chances. Ashes might disappear if Steve Smith or Marnus Labuschagne were to disappear,” Hussain continued.

2015 saw England hold the coveted Ashes urn for the final time. Since then, Australia has won two of the four series between the two teams, with the remaining two ending in draws. The previous time the Australians hosted England, they won the Ashes 4-0 and looked magnificent. It was also Root’s final Ashes series as captain of England; he resigned from the position soon after, and Ben Stokes took over as skipper.
