Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB chairman, is expected to succeed Jay Shah as the president of the Asian Cricket Council

Almost a week after Jay Shah was unanimously elected to the position of future chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC), new reports indicate that Mohsin Naqvi, the CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is the front-runner to succeed Shah as president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

Interestingly, Shah will have to resign from both the ACC and the BCCI post upon taking over as ICC head, under the council’s regulations. This is done to ensure that there are no conflicts of interest and that no partial or biassed decisions are made in the boards’ favour or against them. Naqvi therefore becomes the front-runner to lead the continental council.

“Naqvi will be confirmed as the new president for a two-year term at the ACC meeting later this year. The PCB CEO will take over after Jay Shah steps down, according to a source cited in a story obtained by NDTV Sports.

With Jay Shah’s appointment, cricket’s participation at the LA28 Olympics is likely.

Shah was clearly thrilled to have been proposed for the position of chair of the international governing body. Shah also discussed the few goals he had in mind for the game’s improvement, which included regulating the different forms and incorporating important elements like inclusivity and diversity into their next procedures. He also discussed cricket’s inclusion in the Summer Olympics in 2028 and the significant contribution it would make to the sport’s continued spread to underserved regions.

“I am honoured to be proposed for the position of International Cricket Council Chair. In order to further globalise cricket, I’m determined to collaborate closely with the ICC team and our member countries. At this pivotal moment, it is more crucial than ever to encourage the adoption of cutting-edge technology, strike a balance between the coexistence of many forms, and expand the reach of our major events into new international markets. Our objective is to increase cricket’s appeal and inclusivity beyond all previous levels.

“To increase the passion for cricket around the world, we must welcome new ideas and creativity in addition to building on the important lessons we have learnt. At the time of his election, Shah stated, “I am convinced that the inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 will propel the sport forward in unprecedented ways. It represents a significant turning point for the growth of cricket.”
