'Will take a moment to sink in': Gus Atkinson reacts to century and five-for at Lord's

Gus Atkinson, an England pacer, debuted at Lord’s earlier in the summer against the West Indies. He took seven wickets in that match, which was an incredible beginning to his international career. In less than two months, the cricket player from Chelsea achieved his second five-for at the renowned stadium. Additionally, he struck an amazing century, making him one of the exceptional players to be included on both the Lord’s honours board.

The 26-year-old scored 118 runs at a strike rate of 102.61 in the second Test match against Sri Lanka, assisting England in scoring 427 runs in the opening innings. He took Nishan Madushka‘s wicket during Sri Lanka’s chase, and he was instrumental in getting rid of their middle order, which helped England win by ninety runs. Joe Root broke numerous records and made two centuries, but Atkinson’s century and five-for earned him Player of the Match honours.

Atkinson said that it would take him some time to process the thrill of reaching both honours’ boards during the post-match presentation. He mentioned how it was to bat with Joe Root and said his father must be overjoyed.

“It will take some time for it to sink in, but getting on both honour rolls is amazing. Batting with Root during the first innings was particularly memorable.” Atkinson remarked, “I’m sure Dad has had a great week.”

Atkinson talked about his performance at Lord’s and his experience there as well. He expressed his enjoyment of the slope the pitch offers and expressed his desire to play there more often. The bowler also talked candidly about playing a physical style of cricket without giving much thought to the number of runs.

“My initial red-ball matches at Lord’s have gone well; I look forward to continuing to bowl with the slope.” We prefer to attack because that’s how we approach the game, and it’s nice to attack without having to worry about runs,” Atkinson continued.
