West Indies women announce group for T20 World Cup, Deandra Dottin come back after two years

For the forthcoming women’s T20 World Cup, iconic West Indian star Deandra Dottin returned to the team two years after a surprise retirement. Notably, the UAE has now become the site of the competition. The quickest century-maker in women’s T20I history, Dottin, has bowed out of the Commonwealth Games in 2022 while captaining Barbados because of unhealthy conditions on some teams.

But she made a U-turn and came out of retirement last month in an attempt to win the World Cup. Similarly, on Thursday, August 29, Cricket West Indies (CWI) revealed their 15-man team for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) major event. In addition to the storied Dottin, the team also featured uncapped player Nerissa Crafton.

We have a good balance between youth and experience. We have a few guys that are almost 19 years old; Zaida is still most likely an adolescent, as are one or two of the younger players. I’m really pleased with the combination. Additionally, I believe that the return of Deandra Dottin excites all West Indians,” CWI President Kishore Shallow stated following the squad’s announcement.

“We have been in contact with Deandra for a year, exchanging messages back and forth. I would especially like to acknowledge Ann Browne-John’s contribution, as she spearheaded these discussions even though she wasn’t the official selector. She was crucial to Deandra’s decision to come out of retirement,” he continued.

In WCPL 2024, Deandra Dottin has been doing admirably.

Regarding Deandra Dottin’s play, she concluded the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) league phase as her team’s third-highest run scorer. She was also the only batter in the competition to have hit more than two sixes. Dottin averaged 28.35 and scored 113 runs at a respectable strike rate of 111.88 in her four games.

In addition, she struck quickly against the Guyana Amazon Warriors, scoring 53 off 38 balls, forcing a dramatic Super-Over finish. In addition, she hit 13 runs off of just four deliveries in the Super Over, helping her team, the Trinbago Knight Riders, win.

West Indies squad for Women’s T20 World Cup:

Hayley Matthews (c), Shermaine Campbelle, Aaliyah Alleyne, Afy Fletcher, Ashmini Munisar, Chedean Nation, Chinelle Henry, Deandra Dottin, Karishma Ramharack, Mandy Mangru, Nerissa Crafton, Qiana Joseph, Shamila Connell, Stafanie Taylor, Zaida James.
