Shikhar Dhawan picks his best knock in India colours, saying, "I took some painkillers and scored."

Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from both domestic and international cricket in a video statement shared on social media on Saturday, August 24.

The southpaw, who began his international career in 2010, has received emotional congratulations from the cricket community. He scored multiple game-winning innings for the Men in Blue. While Dhawan experienced ups and downs like every other cricket player, he stood out due to his ability to perform at his best during ICC competitions.

The Delhi batsman declared his retirement, and his best innings came against Australia at The Oval in London during the 2019 ODI World Cup—117 off 109 balls—which demonstrated his bravery and tenacity. It was eventually discovered that Dhawan’s thumb fractured as a result of a delivery from Pat Cummins during the ninth over of the game. The leadoff hitter, however, took some painkillers and stayed on the pitch to bat. Eventually, he struck a spectacular century to lead India to a 36-run victory in the high-scoring match.

“I have a few unique innings that I hold very dear, particularly the one from the 2019 World Cup. We were engaged in a match with the Australians. I shattered my thumb while batting 25. The ball struck my here (indicating his left thumb) at 150 clicks. Painkillers helped me get 117 points,” Dhawan said to Hindustan Times.

“I was also rather well-kicked by the MCG one. especially since I hadn’t been scoring runs before. I appreciate Dhoni supporting me and sticking by me during the World Cup. Although I’ve always been able to do effectively in ODIs, form lapses are unavoidable. That’s when my 137 runs came in. “I also enjoy that one,” Dhawan continued.

During his international career, the 38-year-old participated in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is. He was at his best in the 50-over format, scoring 6,793 runs with a strike rate of 91.35 and an average of 44.11. Throughout his ODI career, he scored 39 half-centuries and 17 centuries.
