In 2016, Faruque Ahmed resigned from his role as top selector following Head Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe’s inception of a two-tier selection panel via BCB president Nazmul Hassan at the time. In 2023, Hathurusinghe began his second term with Bangladesh, and the current president of the BCB was the first to express doubts about the appointment. Coincidentally, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal launched a defamatory campaign in the media, causing unrest in the dressing room. “Reintroducing Hathurusinghe for a second term was a grave mistake. The last time he quit [in 2017], he had left us in jeopardy. For him, Bangladesh served as a stepping stone. He returned home and took up the role of head coach there. It was inconceivable to me that the president and the other 25 members of the board of directors could have reached such a conclusion. Faruque said, “I hope they are realising their mistake.”
