Faruque Ahmed, the recently elected president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has stated that he believes Tamim Iqbal should play for a further two to three years. With his withdrawal from the ODI World Cup in India last year, Tamim claimed he was unhappy with “dirty games” and hasn’t played for the national squad since.
Tamim, one of Bangladesh’s most well-known cricket players, has spent more than ten years as a vital member of the national squad. But his recent absence from the team—which was mostly brought on by personal choices and physical concerns—has made people wonder what lies ahead for him. After Tamim was spotted with Asif Mahmud, an advisor to the Youth and Sports Ministry, there was conjecture that he would have a non-playing role in the cricket board.
Tamim’s possible comeback to the field was a topic Ahmed discussed during his first official press conference as BCB president. Faruque agreed that the left-hander was crucial to Bangladesh’s cricket team.
“I need to speak with him [Tamim]. He’s a very mature young man. He is among the greatest in Bangladesh, in my opinion. In my opinion, he should continue playing for another two to three years. It’s not a given that I’ll get my wish, though. We’ll have to see how fit he is,” Faruque stated to the press.

Any decision, Faruque underlined, would come after rigorous evaluation of Tamim’s fitness and deliberations with the player and the medical staff. In addition, Faruque alluded to Tamim’s possible future with the cricket board should he want to retire from competition.

“We need to see the manner in which the pertinent department handles these issues. Tests may be challenging, but if they are ODIs, that’s wonderful. In whatever he does, it’s excellent if he can play; if not, I’ll be glad if he comes to the board. Faruque continued, “He has leadership qualities, and if guys like him come [to the board], we can do something good.”
