Steve Smith maintains his 2028 ambition while T20I spot fades: "It would be cool to be part of an Olympics."

Australia’s adventure came to an end in the Super 8 rounds of the tournament, and Steve Smith was left out of the T20 World Cup 2024. Steve Smith, though, is still active for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League. Notably, in an attempt to make the T20I squad for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, the renowned Australian recently inked a three-year contract with the team.

For those who don’t know, one of the sports that will be included to the Olympics beginning in 2028 is cricket. It is noteworthy that Steve Smith was seen starting for the Sixers following David Warner’s announcement of his retirement from Test and white-ball cricket; but, the hitters failed to muster a significant score to support Steve Smith hopes. After his miserable performance in the 2023 World Cup, there were rumours that the 35-year-old would be retiring in one of the forms. However, the former captain of Australia exuded optimism that he would stay for a while.

“You never know, I might still be playing T20 cricket in four years. I think I’ll be playing this format a lot longer than some of the others, especially with all the global franchise content. Since I signed up for three years, there won’t be much more time after that. Being a part of the Olympics would be awesome,” Smith stated, as cited by ESPNcricinfo.

“I have no plans at all. I’m just having fun playing right now; I’m unhurried and excited for this summer,” he continued.

It’s difficult to hide in a five-test series: Steve Smith

As a batter, Steven Smith’s performance against India in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be scrutinised. For a while now, he hasn’t been the best batter in red-ball cricket. While the right-handed batsman’s dreams of playing in Twenty20 Internationals remain distant, a strong showing against India could guarantee him a spot in the 50-over format.

“Unlike in a two-match series, for example, you can’t really hide in a five-Test series. Recovering from someone getting the wood on you might be difficult. Smith said, “It’s going to be a fantastic series.”
