Sunil Gavaskar calls the IPL teams' choice to select players from state T20 competitions a "complete waste of money."

According to News18, Sunil Gavaskar stated in his Mid-Day column, “We have already seen how most Under-19 players struggle to get their footing at the first-class level as the standard of the opposition is way higher than in the junior tournaments.”

He also wrote that teams are slowly realising these players are worthless from the state-run T20 competitions.

In a similar vein, players who excel in State T20 leagues don’t always

mimic their results in the IPL or the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where the bar is considerably higher. The teams are seeing it’s a bad idea and a complete waste of money to pay players who excel in the State Premier Leagues billions of rupees, according to Gavaskar.

Sunil Gavaskar believes that test contests have far superior filtration parameters.

The former cricket player who is now a broadcaster noted that competitions such as the Duleep Trophy would be more superior venues to assess the players’ eligibility.

“In a few weeks, the Duleep Trophy will kick off the Indian cricket season, and it’s encouraging to see that all of the international players will be competing. According to Gavaskar, that is the only certain way the selectors can determine whether the batters and bowlers are skilled enough to advance to the international level.

In an effort to acclimatise them to playing the longest format at home, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill are among the international players who have been added to the competition. The two-match series against Bangladesh will be followed by a three-match challenge against New Zealand.
