'The batters need to be a lot more ruthless' - Temba Bavuma before the 2nd Test matchup with the West Indies

In the second Test against the West Indies in Guyana, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma anticipates his front-line hitters to be more brutal and aggressive. Rain had its way, causing the first match of the series to end evenly. The visitors dominated for most of the match, but West Indies orchestrated a late-game rally to force a tie.

Bavuma instructed the batsmen to take advantage of the opportunity at the top of the order and secure a strong start for the team ahead of the second Test. There was a feeling of frustration following the last game, he continued, because he thought South Africa could have won if there had been a little more time.

“The batters must possess far greater ruthlessness. In order to give us additional bowling time, the men who have a chance to settle in really need to step up and get a base score for the team.

A result could have been achieved with a little bit more time, therefore there was understandably some frustration, Temba Bavuma was cited by Times of India as saying.

The bowlers were praised by Bavuma, who said that they gave it their all given the circumstances. Although they are a young team, he continued, the team’s confidence is rising, and he thinks this will make them a formidable force.

“I believe that, given the circumstances, the bowlers did the best they could. Keshav (Maharaj) performed a remarkable feat by bowling nearly half of the innings.

Although the team is still young and inexperienced, confidence is rising inside it. It’s simply a matter of us working on it and bringing everything together, in my opinion, which will truly make us a strong squad, Bavuma continued.
