Invincibles easily defeat Spirit to take their place in the top three

In front of 14,721 spectators at The Hundred at The Kia Oval, Lauren Winfield-Hill’s half-century helped Oval Invincibles defeat London Spirit in a pivotal match.

The Invincibles captain, Winfield-Hill, made her first half-century of the season with 61 from 40 balls while leading the chase of 120. She worked well with Marizanne Kapp to ease the burden of what could have been a much more difficult chase.

Thanks to the first-inning heroics of Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma, who led the visitors from a precarious 47 for 7 to a score of 120 for 8, the Invincibles had anything to chase.

Invincibles bowlers claimed a wicket apiece to take an early lead in the match; Kapp won the battle of the foreign stars with a third-ball dismissal of Meg Lanning. Sharma and Eva Grey then rebuilt with a record eight-wicket partnership.

Even though the game was close at the half, Winfield-Hill batted wisely the entire time, neutralising Spirit’s three spinners’ danger by controlling the field and getting to behind square with ease.

Though Spirit could have sent Winfield-Hill on her way if they had chosen to review a close LBW verdict against bowler Dani Gibson, chances were few and far between.

With nine balls remaining, the chase was completed thanks to the contribution of Kapp, who entered the game after birthday girl Alice Capsey was bowled rampantly. Winfield-Hill had set the groundwork beforehand.

With one game remaining before The Hundred Eliminator and The Hundred Final, Manchester Originals’ victory over Invincibles not only ensured the tournament’s conclusion but also gave them greater influence over their own fate.

To guarantee a spot in the top three, London Spirit, who also have one game remaining, must win their last match and pray for other outcomes to go their way.

“It’s a great feeling,” stated Meerkat Match Hero Winfield-Hill. I’m glad I could help, especially with the business end, as I was due. Getting another win and another strong performance makes me very happy.

A small amount of hold was present in the wicket. Although there wasn’t much turn, it merely seemed to hold and bounce a little. I don’t think I’ve ever played that many reverse sweeps in my entire career, to be honest, but I just kept doing what was effective because it was working.

“I was really determined to put in a good performance today, and to be there at the end with Kappy is a really nice feeling.”

[Regarding the Invincibles’ aspirations of advancing directly to The Hundred Final, hoping Southern Brave defeats Welsh Fire] “This time of year, the competition, is always difficult. It’s possible that you occasionally lose focus on your own goals because you pay so much attention to other teams’ performances and wish them well.

Let’s concentrate on our goals and perform at our highest level of cricket, Danni Wyatt and team, please. That would be incredibly helpful.”
