‘The way they treated us was horrible’ - Shardul Thakur on India's experiences during the 2020–21 trip of Australia

The severe treatment the Indian team received during their 2020–21 tour of Australia was recently disclosed by all-rounder Shardul Thakur. India overcame all odds to secure a historic 1-2 series victory over the Australians.

India’s 2020–21 tour to Australia is one that exceeded all expectations; following a crushing loss in Adelaide in the first Test, they pulled off a flawless comeback to win the second Test in Melbourne and draw the third in Sydney. India secured a historic victory at the Gabba to end the series.

Shardul did disclose that the visitors’ journey was not without difficulty. The all-round player talked candidly about the difficulties India had on their journey.

“They handled us in an absolutely appalling manner. There won’t be any housekeeping in the hotel for four or five days. If you wanted to change your bed linens, you would need to climb four or five flights of steps. Come change it when you’re tired and take care of yourself, Shardul said IISM.

Shardul also discussed the difficulties the team encountered with the departure of Virat Kohli and the appointment of Ajinkya Rahane as captain. He disclosed that in order to obtain what they desired, Cricket Australia and the former coach Ravi Shastri frequently got into altercations.

“Ajinkya was leading; Virat had left, our coach Ravi Shastri. To get what we wanted, they both engaged in constant conflict with the Australian Cricket Board. Yes, the entire tour was challenging. Accidents continued to occur. In the most recent game, [Navdeep] Saini sustained an injury.
