Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that it will file an appeal against a decision made by the Guyana High Court regarding the nomination of Azim Bassarath as vice president.
The GCB, which had contested Bassarath’s election to the esteemed position, won its case before the Guyana High Court on Monday, August 5.
On March 25, 2023, at the 24th annual general meeting in Antigua, Bassarath was chosen vice-president of the CWI without opposition. With just two votes against, Bassarath received six votes, making it an overwhelming victory. Four choose not to cast a ballot in the interim.
Nonetheless, Bassarath, Gregory Nicholls, the returning officer, and Cricket West Indies Inc. were all named as respondents in a lawsuit that was filed against them.
CWI announced in a press statement on Monday that it would file an appeal against the High Court of Guyana’s ruling.
“The respondents respectfully disagree with the decision made by the court. As a result, CWI has directed its legal counsel to file an appeal right now, and it will watch for the appellate court’s ruling, according to a press release from CWI.
The GCB first nominated Bassarath ahead of the 2023 elections, but then withdrew its nomination in writing before the polls, but after the nomination time had passed.
The GCB’s representatives protested to CWI’s decision to move forward with Bassarath’s election notwithstanding the withdrawal of the nomination and restated the Board’s position on the matter during the elections.
The Guyana Board reportedly received severe charges of misconduct at the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board in the run-up to the CWI elections, which prompted the GCB to decide to withdraw their nomination of Bassarath, as reported by the Jamaica Gleaner.

Among the Caribbean’s most prosperous cricketing nations, Guyana produced a number of iconic players for the West Indies, including Clive Lloyd, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and Carl Hooper.
