Watch: Amid political unrest in Bangladesh, people set fire to Mashrafe Mortaza's home

Mashrafe Mortaza, the former captain of Bangladesh, reportedly set his house on fire amid the violence and mayhem that followed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure on Monday.

Mortaza, a member of parliament for the Narail-2 constituency in the Khulna division, was elected again in the general elections held earlier in 2024 as an Awami League candidate under the direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Following huge student protests, the PM left the nation, and the local media had reported that the vandals had attacked and set fire to Mortaza’s house.

In 117 cricket matches over his career, Mortaza captained Bangladesh. Throughout 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is, he claimed 390 international wickets and amassed 2,955 runs. The former captain of the team retired from competition in 2018. He then joined Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League and won an election to become an MP for the Narail-2 constituency.

According to News24, the protesters also vandalised the president’s home and set fire to the District Awami League office.

Additionally, throngs of people barged inside the opulent Ganabhaban, the prime minister’s official mansion. Her TV, furniture, and a great deal more were taken away by the mob, even her clothes. Her second 15-year stint in office came to an end when Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh. She had been in charge of Bangladesh for 20 of the previous 30 years, carrying on her father’s political activism after he and his family were killed in a coup in 1975.

Hasina wanted to stay in Bangladesh, but she decided to go since her family was pressuring her to go for safety, as her son disclosed when she arrived in India.

She had no intention of leaving the nation; she wanted to stay. We persisted, though, in saying that it wasn’t safe for her. Joy, her son, told NDTV that their priority was ensuring her bodily safety, so they convinced her to depart.
