Captain of Sri Lanka Charith Asalanka won the toss and decided to bat first at the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo. India and Sri Lanka tied in the opening ODI, setting up the Indian players for a significant role later on. Because the surface seemed to be decent, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said he felt comfortable batting second here. In the Twenty20 series versus Sri Lanka, India utterly dominated.
Mohammed Siraj took Asitha Fernando out for just one run, giving him the opening wicket of the game. Before Shivam Dube, playing in his first ODI since December 2019, grabbed his first-ever ODI wicket, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis were enjoying a solid 43-run partnership.

However, Sri Lanka reached 230/8 thanks to a passionate 46-run eighth-wicket stand (off 39 balls) between Dunith Wellalage and Akila Dananjaya.
As soon as the run-chase got underway, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill took the aggressive position. In the powerplay, India scored 71 runs in spite of a maiden over. However, India collapsed from over 11 to 16, managing just 16 runs and dropping three crucial wickets. This included the skipper, who became Wellalage’s second death after a windy fifty runs.
After KL Rahul and Axar Patel both made big contributions in their thirties but couldn’t build on their starts, it was up to Shivam Dube to secure the victory. Dube put on a fantastic display, hitting two sixes and a four in addition to numerous other boundaries to reach 25.

But Asalanka trapped him leg before wicket, so his innings was over before it even started. Arshdeep Singh returned to the crease after this removal but caved in to pressure too on the very next delivery, ending Sri Lanka’s amazing comeback. Given India’s position during the first power play, Sri Lanka will undoubtedly view this outcome as a significant win. This was India’s tenth tie match overall in the history of the ODI format and the second between the two nations; the first was played in 2012.
