"Time thoda lagta hai" - MS Dhoni expresses his deepest feelings over the World Cup 2019 semifinal fiasco

Every Indian cricket fan will always remember MS Dhoni’s run-out in the World Cup 2019 semi-final match against New Zealand as the worst sight of the year. India’s chances of winning the World Cup were destroyed when Martin Guptill struck a straight blow to remove the veteran, and it turned out to be the legend’s final international match. Recalling the incident in response to a fan’s query, Dhoni said it required some time to get over the defeat.

On August 15, 2020, the former captain of India announced his retirement from international cricket. He has not played in a match after the semi-final. Though he gave over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad in 2024, he still plays for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

MS Dhoni added to the chaos in the semifinals by saying that optimism is crucial to realise that one gave it one’s all.

It was challenging since I was aware that this would be my final World Cup, and I would have preferred to win. We tried to move on after accepting the outcome, as it was a heartbreaking moment. Time is passing quickly, but the World Cup is coming up soon. Although Maine is not a very international place, it is nonetheless a really interesting place to visit.

(It requires time, and following the World Cup, one has some time). After that, I didn’t play in any international competitions, so I had plenty of leisure. Indeed, it was heartbreaking, but you also had to go past it. Thus, you just have to accept that even though you gave it your all, you were unable to win,” Dhoni stated, according to NDTV Sports.

India finally ends their lengthy trophy drought in the ICC

Following the 2019 World Cup, India pursued their quest for ICC glory. Under Virat Kohli, they were unsuccessful in the T20 World Cup 2021, losing in the group stage.

After that, they were defeated by New Zealand in the World Test Championship 2021 final, and Virat was replaced as captain by Rohit Sharma. Australia defeated India in both the 2023 World Cup and WTC finals under Rohit’s leadership. However, the team’s victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final on June 29 in Barbados put an end to their trophy drought.
