The owners of the different IPL franchises recently met with the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). The conference, which was held at the BCCI office, covered a wide range of topics related to the retentions for the next IPL season. The question of whether the RTM cards should be reinstated was also debated. Other topics covered included the frequency of the mega auctions and the purse.
Participants in the meeting included Parth Jindal (DC), Kavya Maran (SRH), Shah Rukh Khan (KKR), Manoj Badale and Ranjit Barthakur (Rajasthan Royals), Kiran Gandhi (DC), Rupa Gurunath and Kasi Viswanathan (CSK), Prathmesh Mishra and Rajesh Menon (RCB), Sanjiv Goenka and Shashwat Goenka (LSG), Ness Wadia (Punjab Kings), Amit Soni (Gujarat Titans), and Akash Ambani (Mumbai Indians).
The impact player rule was one of the main topics covered. The purpose of the rule was to enable uncapped Indian players gain exposure by allowing them to play more. It was countered, nevertheless, that it does not guarantee fair play.
Parth Jindal, a co-owner of the Delhi Capitals, spoke out against the Impact Player rule, saying that traditional 11v11 matches should continue and that it should be eliminated from the IPL in 2025. “I’m not interested in it. However, there was a lot of discussion about retentions during the meeting. According to reports, Kavya Maran, the owner of Sunrisers Hyderabad, has requested seven retentions because SRH has some well-known players on its team, including Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, Nitish Reddy, and T Natarajan.
Maran had further requested that the BCCI refrain from placing a limit on the quantity of Indian players, both capped and uncapped, that a team might keep after the retention threshold has been established.
The RTM technique should be the only means by which eight players are brought back, according to the Kolkata Knight Riders. Maran had also said at the meeting that the teams should have the opportunity to talk to the player in advance about whether they would prefer to be kept through the RTM option or before the auction.
It’s important to notice that the RTM was absent from the 2022 IPL super auction but was employed in the 2018 event. According to Kavya Maran, a player who chooses to use the RTM option in the auction could receive a higher payout. Maran was among the minority who supported holding the massive auction once every five years. She also suggested that the 2025 season just feature a mini-auction.
