Shubman Gill believes that with Gautam Gambhir leading the coaching staff, India will only get stronger. Three T20Is and as many ODIs will pit the Men in Blue against Sri Lanka. On July 27, the first Twenty20 International (T20I) between the two teams will take place in Pallekele, marking the start of the white-ball tour.
During the Island Nation trip, Gill will lead India’s T20I and ODI teams as vice captain. In the meantime, Gambhir is leading the team for the first time as head coach after Rahul Dravid resigned after India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. In Sri Lanka, the Indian squad has been training hard under Gambhir’s close supervision. Gill praised the two-time IPL champion captain for his thoughtfulness when addressing the players.
“We will play like the world champions that we are, and hopefully the new coaching staff will help us achieve greater success. “I am working with Gambhir for the first time,” Gill said to the press at a news conference in Pallekele, Sri Lanka.
“However, he was very explicit in his communication and intent throughout those two net sessions. He is quite specific about the person he wants to work with and the areas on which he wants to work with him at any given time,” the speaker continued.
“I still have to perform when I bat out there,” Shubman Gill said in reference to his adjustments following his promotion to vice captain.
The 24-year-old stated that despite being named vice captain, his objectives as a hitter will not alter. The only thing that would alter, he said, will be having to answer a few calls while on the pitch.
“Vice-captaincy isn’t really that different. I still have to produce when I bat and I have to win games for the club,” Gill stated.
“But when you are out on the pitch, you need to make a bit more decisions, and that’s the only difference,” he stated.

Earlier this month, in Zimbabwe, the right-handed hitter helped an inexperienced Indian team win a series 4-1. As the series’ top run scorer at the end, he would like to improve on his performances from the Sri Lankan trip.
