Reports: BCCI will finalise 5-6 retentions for IPL 2025; RTM option will be debated on July 31

On July 31, BCCI representatives and IPL owners will meet to complete IPL 2025 preparations. Before the big auction, a number of franchises have presented their perspectives on retention and RTM use; nonetheless, it is anticipated that a consensus will be achieved during the meeting. Currently, BCCI is expected to permit each franchise to keep five to six players, and the regulation pertaining to RTM cards will be deliberated over during a meeting held at BCCI’s headquarters, situated in Wankhede Stadium.

Many team owners suggested to BCCI that they be allowed to keep eight players before to the mega auction, according to That didn’t impress the officials, though, as it would mean that 80 elite players from India and around the world would miss the auction, making it a dull event. All of the franchises were only permitted to keep our players prior to the 2022 mega auction; however, given the amount of work each team put into developing each player, they should be able to add one or two more.

The use of RTM cards is still a contentious issue in the meantime. Since the intention was to sell players at market value, BCCI rejected them in 2022.

It has been observed that certain teams purposefully exaggerate their pricing, compelling other teams to spend more money—a move that the BCCI executives eventually rejected. We’ll have to wait and see whether it’s brought back in 2024.

However, each team’s budget is probably going to go up as well. The Australian pair Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins became the most expensive players in the tournament’s history when they were sold for INR 24.75 crore and INR 20.50 crore, respectively, last year. In light of the increasing financial flow, BCCI intends to raise its funding for the upcoming season to a range of INR 120–130 crore. It is also a topic that will be covered in the July 31 meeting.
