India revealed their team last week for their forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue will play the Lankan Lions in three Twenty20 Internationals and as many One-Day Internationals. Shubman Gill’s selection as the two squads’ vice-captain was among the BCCI’s most intriguing decisions.
In the game’s shortest format, the Punjab batsman took over as India’s vice captain in lieu of Hardik Pandya. In the meantime, he was selected as vice captain for the ODI team, surpassing more seasoned players like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer. Gill recently captained India to a 4-1 victory in the Twenty20 International Series in Zimbabwe, his first task as the team’s captain.
Ashish Nehra, who collaborated closely with Gill while playing for the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, applauded BCCI’s decision to assign the 24-year-old to the esteemed role. The former bowler for India praised the GT captain’s eagerness to learn and insisted that he will continue to become better.
“They have created Shubman Gill in each of the three configurations, not just one. That implies you are planning forward,” Nehra said to SportsTak, a sister channel of India Today.
“Shubman Gill is still developing. He is currently 24 or 25 years old. He will improve as we move forward. He has the will to learn and the ambition to play in all three forms. He doesn’t believe that whatever he does is morally correct. That kind of guy is not him. He enjoys having conversations and learning, regardless of the player’s expertise level,” he remarked.

The first T20I series in Pallekele marks the start of India’s tour to Sri Lanka. Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is where all three games will take place. The dates of the three games are July 27, 28, and 30. In the meantime, August 2, 4, and 7 will see the ODI matches held in Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium.
