In front of his family in Galle, former Sri Lankan cricket player Dhammika Niroshana was fatally shot

On Tuesday night, July 16, Dhammika Niroshana, a former cricketer for Sri Lanka, was shot and killed at his home in Ambalangoda, Galle district. The former U19 captain, 41, was brutally and abruptly killed by an unknown assailant while he was in the company of his wife and two children.

In 2000, Dhammika Niroshana made his debut for the Sri Lankan U19 team. He advanced through the ranks fast, becoming the team captain for the New Zealand U19 World Cup in 2002. During the tournament, Dhammika Niroshana took seven wickets in five innings at an average of 19.28, with a high of 3/38.

Talents like Farveez Maharoof, Angelo Mathews, and Upul Tharanga were developed under his direction and went on to represent the island nation at the highest level. Throughout his career, Dhammika Niroshana represented the Galle Cricket Club in 12 first-class and 8 List-A matches, amassing over 300 runs and 19 wickets.

There is still no apparent motivation for this horrible crime, thus local authorities are left in the dark. To find the perpetrator and understand the circumstances behind this unfortunate incident, the Sri Lankan Police have initiated a comprehensive investigation.

The Sri Lankan cricket team is getting ready to host India for a forthcoming white-ball series while the country struggles with this tragedy. Three T20Is and three ODIs will be played in the series beginning on July 27.

As head coach for the Men in Blue, former India opener Gautam Gambhir will make his debut, and the team will get used to Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja’s retirement from T20I cricket. Legendary all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya has been named the temporary head coach for the hosts in the meantime.
